Why does Extract use a wax pen?

/ December 26, 2020

Every review on this site so far has been done with a single wax atomizer – the Divine Crossing V3.5. If you’ve never seen a wax pen before, you’re probably wondering what it is. Wax pens are the best alternative to using something like a dab rig. They offer an excellent level of control for temperatures, great taste and a wide range of atomizers to choose from. The DC V3.5 isn’t by any means the greatest wax atomizer available but it provides the best taste of any atomizer we have tried, so far.

Both could use a clean up. The Pico has been in regular use for 3 years now.

Why you should get a wax pen

Not to be preachy, but they’re really awesome with a few exceptions. Let’s go over the good and bad:

Good

  • Inexpensive – you can get started with a decent setup for around $150 CAD
  • Customizable – most models have many coil options
  • Repairable – many have cheap replacement parts
  • Efficient – it’s very easy to micro-dose

Bad

  • Learning curve – need to understand resistance, coils, wattage and a few other concepts to make sure it works correctly
  • Maintenance – depends on the model
  • Customization – requires you to install custom firmware to your box mod
  • Capacity – bowl sizes are generally small which means these aren’t session devices but load as you go

Why you should get the right wax pen

There’s one big thing here. Avoid current retail products offered in recreational stores, especially the “all in one” type of pens with a single button on a thin battery stick. Those Dr. Dabber/Puffco/whatever products that are all nearly identical are overpriced and will under deliver.

Hype pens
Stay away from these types of wax pens

If you want to see the more popular brands of wax pens, visit /r/waxpen and look through the posts. Most users there are pretty knowledgeable and will generally answer any questions you have.

Our personal choice for wax pens is of course the Divine Crossing V3.5 and V4. Both of these deliver an excellent vaping experience, depending on what you want. The V3.5 uses a donut coil which the extract is placed upon. The V4 has bucket attachments, which that same donut coil heats, resulting in your product getting indirectly heated. The V4 is much less maintenance, but requires more power to heat. The V3.5 is preferred for the instant heat up time and low overall power requirements, though it requires regular cleaning. I’m just a fanboy of this product, as other similar offerings are very good.

What mod should I get?

All mods have firmware which supports wax pen coils, while some are harder than others to set up. The Articfox Firmware for the iStick Pico (among others) is definitely the recommended starting point. This does require you to update the firmware, set up profiles for your atomizer but provides great customization and you only need to set it up once. We will be creating a guide to setting up your waxpen in the future!

The other mod in the picture is a Paranormal DNA 250c which has even better temperature control, two batteries, a colour screen and better build quality. It’s fancy but the Pico does a great job and works perfect.

In Conclusion

There’s a lot of great ways to vape cannabis extract, so I’m not going to say this is the best. Wax pens are for people who like to tinker with things, enjoy customizing their vape experience exactly to how they would like and don’t mind dealing with some small roadblocks when it comes to setting them up.

If you want to get into wax pens but don’t have enough for a proper one, do not cheap out and get a low cost, all in one wax pen. It will eventually clog, you’ll realize the replacements cost half the price of a new one and there’s no way to fix it yourself. The appeal of getting started right away will wear off when it stops performing how you’d like it to.
